Islands Unknown – Paperhand Puppet Intervention returns with its annual outdoor summer show, this time “an epic odyssey that will take us to the depths of the imagination and the very ends of the earth… in 3-D!” Bring the kids, bring the adults, bring everybody. (Also bring something to sit on and some bug repellant.) This weekend: Friday-Sunday 7:00 Pre-show starts at 6:20. Continues through September 6. Forest Theatre, UNC Campus, Chapel Hill.

Fiddler on the Roof – Clayton Youth Theater presents the musical adaptation of Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye and his Daughters. This weekend only: Friday 7:30, Saturday 2:00 and 7:30. The Clayton Center, Clayton.

Ruby Red – The death of an elderly curmudgeon brings complications for his grown children and for a neighboring couple in this world premiere by local playwright Phil Lowden. This weekend only: Thursday and Friday 7:00, Saturday 2:00. Thursday show at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center, Friday and Saturday at the Herb Young Community Center, Cary.

You Can’t Take It with You – Student-run theater company One Song Productions stages the 1936 Kaufman and Hart comedy about a family of eccentrics. This weekend only: Thursday-Friday 7:30, Saturday 3:00 and 7:30. Common Ground Theatre, Durham.

Death and the Maiden – A former political prisoner confronts a man she believes was her torturer. Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy presents the Ariel Dorfman play. This weekend: Wednesday-Saturday 8:00, Sunday 3:00. Closes Sunday.

Overtones – A 1916 play by Alice Gerstenberg, plus a curtain-raiser by Christopher Durang, presented by OdysseyStage Theatre. Wednesday afternoons 3:00 through August 25. Spice Street Restaurant, University Mall, Chapel Hill.

Cary Players holds auditions for its October production of Over the River and Through the Woods, Monday and Tuesday August 9 and 10 at 7:00, Page Walker Arts & History Center, Cary.
