Islands Unknown – It’s the final Forest Theatre weekend for Paperhand Puppet Intervention’s annual outdoor summer show, “an epic odyssey that will take us to the depths of the imagination and the very ends of the earth… in 3-D!” Note the added Labor Day performance on Monday night. Bring the kids, bring the adults, bring everybody. (Also bring something to sit on and plenty of bug repellent.) This weekend: Friday-Monday 7:00, pre-show starts at 6:20. Added matinee on Sunday at 3:00, pre-show at 2:20. Closes Monday. Forest Theatre, UNC Campus, Chapel Hill. (If you’re out of town this weekend, there are two encore performances at the NC Museum of Art September 10-11.)
Mi Vida Loca – Eric Overmeyer comedy about a family dealing with the father’s substance abuse issues. This weekend: Wednesday-Thursday 7:30, Friday-Saturday 8:00, Sunday 2:00. Continues through September 18. Deep Dish Theater, Chapel Hill.
Talking Things Over with Chekov – Two ex-lovers journey back to the New York theater scene in a play by John Ford Noonan, presented by FATE (Free Association Theatre Ensemble). This weekend: Thursday-Saturday 8:00 at Common Ground Theatre in Durham, continues next week at Page-Walker Center in Cary.
The Underpants – Steve Martin’s adaptation of the 1910 Carl Sternheim farce, presented by Duke Players as part of student orientation. This weekend: Friday 8:00, Saturday 11:00. Closes Saturday. Brody Theater in Branson, Duke East Campus, Durham.
