Black Pearl Sings – Frank Higgins’ play about an imprisoned African American woman whose musical heritage may gain her freedom. Presented by Theatre in the Park. This week: Friday and Saturday 7:30, Sunday 3:00. Continues through February 22. TIP, Raleigh.

* Hands Up: 6 Playwrights, 6 Testaments – Six monologues by African American playwrights about being a black man in 21st century America. Directed by Monet Marshall. This week only: Thursday-Saturday 8:00. Common Ground Theatre, Durham.

The Mountaintop – Katori Hall’s 2009 drama focuses on Martin Luther King Jr. the night before his assassination. Directed by Jade Arnold. Presented by Justice Theater Project. This week: Friday and Saturday 8:00, Sunday 2:00. Continues through February 22. Clare Hall, St. Francis of Assisi, Raleigh.

* The Piano Lesson – During the Depression, an antique piano becomes the flash point for a Pittsburgh family’s struggle with its legacy. Amy White directs August Wilson’s 1990 play. Presented by William Peace Theatre. This week only: Thursday and Friday 7:30, Saturday 2:00 and 7:30, Sunday 2:00. Closes Sunday. Leggett Theatre, William Peace University, Raleigh.
* Laughter on the 23rd Floor – NRACT presents Neil Simon’s 1993 comedy about writers on a 1950s television show. Directed by Jon Todd. This week: Friday and Saturday 8:00, Sunday 3:00. Closes Sunday. NRACT, Lead Mine Road, Raleigh.

Romeo and Juliet – Burning Coal presents Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy, directed by Emily Ranii. This week: Thursday-Saturday 7:30, Sunday 2:00. Continues through February 15. Burning Coal, Murphey School, Raleigh.

* Trouble in Mind – In the 1950s, a groundbreaking racially integrated Broadway play poses a difficult choice for an African American actress. PlayMakers Rep presents Alice Childress’ 1955 play, directed by Jade King Carroll. This week: Tuesday-Saturday 7:30, Sunday 2:00. Closes Sunday. Paul Green Theatre, UNC Campus, Chapel Hill.
Fairy Tale Puppet Theatre – Fatmouth Improv and PuppetHead Theatre in a family-friendly show of improvisation, puppetry, and fairy tales. This week: Sunday 3:00. (Next week: Benefit performance for Durham Crisis Response Center.) Common Ground Theatre, Durham.
