The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls – A young American woman on her first trip to Russia discovers she will need more than her passport and a guidebook to survive, when she encounters witches, bears, and other mythical forces. Jules Odendahl-James directs Meg Miroshnik’s dark modern fantasy. Presented by Manbites Dog Theater. This week: Thursday-Saturday 8:15. Continues through May 9. Manbites Dog, Durham.

Legally Blonde – Cary Players presents the 2007 musical based on the movie. Director/choreographer: Nancy Rich, music director: Darylene Hecht. This week: Friday and Saturday 7:30, Sunday 3:00. Continues through May 3. Cary Arts Center.

Rent – The 1996 Jonathan Larson musical gets another Triangle staging, this time by NRACT. Directed by David Henderson. This week: Friday and Saturday 8:00, Sunday 3:00. Continues through May 10. NRACT, Lead Mine Road, Raleigh.

* Chamber Music – Eight women – who may or may not be Gertrude Stein, Joan of Arc, Susan B. Anthony, Queen Isabella I, Constanze Mozart, Amelia Earhart, Hollywood star Pearl White, and explorer Osa Johnson – find themselves in an insane asylum. Common Ground Theatre’s Small Series presents Arthur Kopit’s absurdist 1962 one-act. Directed by Rachel Klem, assisted by Nicola Bullock. This week: Thursday-Saturday 8:00. Closes Saturday. Sunday in the Park with George – Burning Coal presents the 1984 Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine musical about painter Georges Seurat and the mystery of artistic creation. Directed by Jerome Davis. This week: Thursday-Saturday 7:30, Sunday 2:00. Continues through May 3. Burning Coal, Murphey School, Raleigh.
