Theater Week – Groovy Nights

groovy hippie

A listing of Triangle theater performances
through July 11, 2016

Hair – Like some acid burnout senior citizen hippie, the 1968 “tribal love-rock musical” returns to find a place to crash and reminisce about how wild the 60s were, man! Politically ground breaking for its time (the height of the Vietnam War), it’s usually presented now as more of a feel-good, audience-flattering nostalgia trip devoid of any present day political relevance, like some Civil War reenactment version of the 1960s. Catchy tunes, though. Theatre in the Park’s version, directed by Ira David Wood III, gets its chance to find the show’s heart of darkness starting this weekend. Performances: Friday and Saturday 7:30, Sunday 3:00. Continues through July 24. TIP, Raleigh.

I Wish You a Boat – In 1899, a shipwreck strikes a boat full of immigrants heading to America. Devised work by Ward Theatre Company, directed by Wendy Ward. This week: Saturday 8:00, Sunday 3:00. Continues through August 28. Ward Theatre, 4905 Pine Cone Drive Suite 12, Durham.

The Light in the Piazza – A mother and daughter’s trip to Italy in the 1950s takes a surprising turn. Theatre Raleigh stages the 2003 musical adaptation of Elizabeth Spencer’s moving 1960 novel in the NC Museum of Art. Director not listed. This week: Wednesday and Thursday 8:00, Saturday/Sunday/Monday 8:00. Continues through July 14. NCMA, Raleigh. (Note: most performances already sold out. Check with box office for information.)

10 by 10 in the Triangle – An ensemble of ten actors perform ten ten-minute plays by ten different playwrights with ten different directors. This week: Friday and Saturday 8:00, Sunday 3:00. Continues through July 24. The ArtsCenter, Carrboro.
