* A Christmas Story – Everybody run, Ralphie’s got a gun. Cary Players presents the stage version of the 1983 movie based on stories by Jean Shepherd. No director listed. This week only: Friday 7:30, Saturday and Sunday 3:00 and 7:30. Closes Sunday. Cary Arts Center.

Cinderella – Raleigh Little Theatre’s annual holiday musical staging of the Charles Perrault fairy tale, adapted and composed by Jim Eiler and Jeanne Bargy. Directed by Rod and Nancy Rich. This week: Friday 7:30, Saturday and Sunday 1:00 and 5:00. Continues through December 17. Sutton Theatre, RLT, Raleigh.

* A Drag Queen Christmas: The Naughty Tour – Holiday-themed songs and drag performance, featuring contestants from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Presented by Murray and Peter. One show only: Tuesday 8:00. Carolina Theatre, Durham.

Peter Pan & Wendy – A new stage adaptation of the J.M. Barrie story, adapted by Lillian White and the Burning Coal Theatre Company. Directed by Lillian White. This week: Thursday and Friday 7:30, Saturday 2:00 and 7:30, Sunday 2:00. Continues through December 17.

* Home for the Holidays! – In 1960’s North Carolina, a family faces being separated at Christmas, unless a miracle happens. Written and directed by Jane Underhill. Presented by The Prime Time Players. This week only: Wednesday 2:00 at the Passmore Center, 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough; Thursday and Saturday 2:00 at Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road in Chapel Hill.

* School of Rock – Through unlikely circumstances, an unsuccessful rock musician takes over as the music teacher at an elite prep school. Rock ensues. Touring production of the 2015 Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, based on the 2003 Richard Linklater/Mike White/Jack Black movie. This week only: Tuesday-Thursday 7:30, Friday 8:00, Saturday 2:00 and 8:00, Sunday 1:00 and 6:30. DPAC, Durham.


Dot – A dysfunctional family with an aging mother reunites for the holidays in her West Philly neighborhood. PlayMakers Rep presents Colman Domingo’s 2016 comedy-drama. Directed by Nicole A. Watson. This week: Tuesday-Friday 7:30, Saturday 2:00 and 7:30, Sunday 2:00. Continues through December 10. Paul Green Theatre, CDA, UNC Campus, Chapel Hill.

Lake Placid – Set in upstate New York during the 1980 Winter Olympics, Little Green Pig’s improvised play with music presents a different story and a different guest star every night. Directed by Jaybird O’Berski; music by Louis Landry. This week: Thursday-Saturday 8:00, “blue show” Saturday 10:00. Continues through December 9. Presented at a new performance space: The Fruit, 305 S. Dillard, Durham.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical – An annual presentation of Broadway Series South, this stage musical version of the Beloved Holiday Classic™ is based on the venerable 1964 Rankin/Bass animated TV Xmas special (which vastly expanded the mythology of Johnny Marks’ 1949 hit song for Gene Autry — itself based on a 1939 Christmas promotional coloring book created by Robert L. May for Montgomery Ward in Chicago). Get your tickets early — this one sells faster than the bargain table at Misfit Toys “R” Us. This week: Friday 6:30, Saturday and Sunday 11:00 and 2:00.
