Crowns – Raleigh Little Theatre presents Regina Taylor’s 2002 musical play, which tells the story of six African-American women through the hats they wear to church. Adapted from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry. Directed by Terra Hodge. This week: Friday and Saturday 8:00, Sunday 3:00. Continues through September 10. Count – Based on conversations with men in prison sentenced to death, Lynden Harris’ play tells the stories of six men on death row who seek to discover what truly constitutes a life well-lived. Presented as a co-production by PRC2 and Hidden Voices. Directed by Kathryn Hunter-Williams. This week only: Wednesday-Saturday 7:30, Sunday 2:00 and 7:30. Of Wings and Feet – Acclaimed local company Paperhand Puppet Intervention returns for its 18th annual giant puppet theater pageant, which explores “the magic and mystery of the living land, sea, and sky in an epic spectacle of struggle and resistance for our times.” Presented Friday-Sunday at 7:00 (6:20 preshow) through September 4 at Forest Theatre, UNC Campus, Chapel Hill (bring cushions/lawn chairs).

Wants Upon a Time – Family-friendly Commedia dell’Arte-inspired site-specific work by Francesca Talenti, based on the story of Rapunzel, performed at artist Patrick Dougherty’s Stickwork Sculpture A Sight to Behold. Presented monthly through September. Performances this week: Friday 6:30 and 7:00. Riverwalk, Hillsborough.
