Ashe in Johannesburg – “Athletes, especially black athletes, must use every resource at their command to right things that are wrong.” In 1973, African American tennis star Arthur Ashe travels to South Africa and confronts its apartheid policies. The Herd – A woman arranges a family gathering for the 21st birthday of her severely disabled son, but things don’t go as planned. Jump – Two grieving strangers meet on a bridge discover the magic of hope. * Miss Saigon – DPAC presents a touring production of the 1989 musical, a loose adaptation of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly transposed to Vietnam during the closing days of the war. Village Voice critic Michael Feingold famously disliked the show when it opened on Broadway in 1991: “Every civilization gets the theater it deserves, and we get Miss Saigon, which means we can now say definitively that our civilization is over.” Celebrate the end of civilization this week only: Tuesday-Thursday 7:30, Friday 8:00, Saturday 2:00 and 8:00, Sunday 1:00 and 6:30. Spring Awakening – Teenagers discover sexuality and things don’t go well. Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s 2006 musical based on the still shocking 1891 play by Frank Wedekind gets its third local production in the last three years, this time by Duke’s student musical theater group Hoof ‘n’ Horn.
