N – In 1920, Eugene O’Neill’s drama The Emperor Jones brought instaneous fame to the playwright and the leading man, African American actor Charles S. Gilpin. O’Neill went on to become a major figure in 20th century theater, while Gilpin faded into obscurity. Theatre in the Park presents the world premiere of Adrienne Earle Pender’s history-based play exploring their relationship. Directed by Hope Alexander. One Man, Two Guvnors – Trying to make ends meet and desperate to fill his stomach, a servant secretly takes a job with two different employers. Richard Bean’s 2011 adaptation of Carlo Goldoni’s 1746 commedia Servant of Two Masters includes songs by Grant Olding, and transposes the commedia action to 1963 England, with the comic complications even more complex, and the servant just as hungry.
